SDCC 2023 ROUND UP

SDCC is over. We’re both back home and recharging from the social battery drain. But that also means we have a lot of memories to recollect. While there we got to speak to Julian Gerighty and Navid Khavari about Star Wars Outlaws and here is what they had to say.

Among the more interesting things that we learned about the new open-world Star Wars game by Massive and Ubisoft was getting to know the developers and where their heads were at when it came to developing a new open-world game for Star Wars.

Being a video game developer, for me, is the best job in the world, but being able to work on Star Wars, which is something I grew up with, incredible!
— Julian Gerighty, Creative Director of Star Wars Outlaws

As loremasters ourselves, the next thing Julian Gerighty had to say was bold but most likely very true:

No matter how much you think you know Star Wars, you don’t really know Star Wars until you start working on it, researching it, understanding some of the design principles that went into the original movies, and the original creations. So, just doing that; Growing as a professional; Understanding the creation of some of these amazing worlds and characters, was something phenomenal.
— Julian Gerighty

And this is true. Even as loremasters, we don’t pretend to know everything about Star Wars; Only that we have dedicated ourselves to knowing all of Star Wars through our consumption of the media, diving into the behind the scenes archives, and perusing all the wonderful source books that Lucasfilm makes available to us. Finally, Navid Khavari (Narrative Director of Star Wars Outlaws) gives us some insight into some of what inspires the team at MASSIVE when it comes to creating this new world.

We pride ourselves on the amount of research we do when delving into an open world, but also delving into a Star Wars open world means you’re looking at everything from War of the Bounty Hunters to the original films.
— Navid Khavari, Narrative Director of Star Wars Outlaws

It is very interesting to learn that their research had also included the WAR OF THE BOUNTY HUNTERS comic run, which should provide us with a great many details that could have been used as inspirations for Kay Vess’ story and what she will encounter in the new game.
